Artist Statement
Peripheral is a body of work that explores heightened psychological awareness emerging during periods of displacement and transition.
Rather than depicting specific locations, the works focus on internal states shaped by unfamiliar social environments—where observation feels constant and self-consciousness intensifies.
Eyes recur throughout the series as both motif and sensation. They operate less as portraits of a watcher and more as ambient presence—suggesting curiosity, surveillance, and the subtle pressure of being seen. What initially appears playful gradually reveals a quiet tension, reflecting the discomfort of visibility before understanding one’s surroundings.
The paintings construct psychological landscapes where looking and being looked at coexist. Through restrained compositions and surreal repetition, Peripheral invites viewers into an in-between space—one defined not by place, but by perception, awareness, and the unease of becoming visible.
