Artist bio
Fatma Mariey is a visual artist whose painting practice explores perception, visibility, and psychological displacement. Working primarily in oil on canvas, her work draws on surreal imagery and symbolic repetition to examine the experience of being observed—socially, culturally, and internally.
Developed during a period of geographic relocation, Peripheral reflects a heightened state of awareness shaped by entering an unfamiliar social environment, where visibility feels constant and self-consciousness is heightened. Eyes recur throughout the series as both motif and sensation—at times playful, at times unsettling—functioning as stand-ins for curiosity, surveillance, and ambient social gaze.
Rather than depicting place directly, Mariey’s paintings construct psychological landscapes where looking and being looked at coexist. Her work occupies an in-between space: intimate yet exposed, whimsical yet tense, inviting viewers to confront the subtle discomfort of visibility before understanding.
Mariey’s practice spans painting, image-making, and editorial visual studies. She is currently based in Saudi Arabia.
